Technique Tip: Reverse Thread Diamond

This week we're focusing on one of my favorite shapes, Reverse Thread Diamond. It's flattering from every angle and it has inspired our newest graphic on tanks and totes.

This skill also has a festive feel, right in time for the holidays! In the video below you will see:

  • How to get into the shape step by step

  • How to create a clear, confident diamond line

  • Smooth exit options

🎥 Watch the Reverse Thread Diamond breakdown and tips for this intermediate skill below.

Setup and Entry

  • Start from an opposite knee hook. The silk is to your right side, hook your left knee.

  • Whichever knee is hooked, that same side arm swims behind the silk.

  • Pass the tail over your lap like a seatbelt.

  • Pike your free leg forward and toss the silk around it from outside in. Pull the wrap up high on your thigh if needed.

  • Swap your knee hook.

Creating the Diamond

  • Find the separation of your tails.

  • Wrap your bottom foot around one silk from big toe to baby toe side.

  • Optional: Hold the tails together with same hand as extended leg while you spin with the other.

  • If your right leg is extended, reach your right arm straight down toward the floor, holding both tails. Use your left hand to pull slack out to the side from your shoulder to create a clear diamond shape.

Exiting

  • Release the wrap on your foot and bring both tails together in front of you.

  • Reach high above your hooked knee with the same side hand.

  • Use your opposite hand to pass the tail from the baby toe side to the big toe side of your hooked knee foot and place it in your opposite shoulder.

  • Pull up, key over to the side of the wrapped leg.

  • Pass the tail off your shoulder and swim to fully exit - you'll end in Hip Key.

  • OR - after the tails are in front of you, climb high above your hooked knee, pull up, unwind the wrap on your leg , key over to the side of the wrapped leg and swim the tail behind you, also ending in Hip Key.

Watch Out Points

  • Make sure you are confident with the opposite knee hook and swim behind. This entry can feel precarious if it is not practiced in advance and it does require shoulder mobility. If you would like extra practice with this part, click here for a tip focused solely on the opposite knee hook and arm swim.

  • When wrapping the free leg, be sure you are wrapping from the outside in. Keeping the leg straight and piked, then tossing the silk over, is usually easier than trying to do the wrap from a bent knee position.

  • To create the diamond shape, one arm reaches directly down toward the floor (over the top of your head) and the other reaches straight out from your shoulder. If the arms angle too far forward or behind you, the shape will not read clearly as a diamond.
