Welcome to your technique tip in the Knee Pocket Climb! It starts with an inversion, then you’ll pull a pocket of slack, wrap the knee and settle into a restful perch position.
At first, this climb can feel a little precarious, but once you understand the key steps and technique details, it becomes a really fun one to add to your repertoire.
🎥 See below for the full video breakdown and tips for this intermediate climb!
Knee Pocket Steps:
Start by inverting with the silk between your legs. (I know, something we rarely do!)
Hook one knee above your hands
Reach toward your inner thigh as you pull slack with your bottom hand toward your chest.
Bend your knee with your heel toward your bum. Wrap your knee until the silk is on your shin.
Keep your heel toward your bum with the intenion of sitting on your heel.
Place both hands below your hooked knee, drive your top leg down to sit your chest up.
Option to cross your free leg over in a 'perch' position or keep it extending down.
Reach hand high, extend wrapped leg and invert either from straight arms, or pull up to invert with bent arms and repeat.
Common Mistakes:
1️⃣ Wrapping your foot instead of the knee A lot of us try to wrap the foot first, but think of it just like Catchers - knee to chest, heel to bum, then wrap while keeping your foot pointed. If you skip that order of operations the wrap won't be secure.
2️⃣ Not pulling enough slack You’ll need a big enough loop of slack to create the pocket around your knee. Aim to pull the fabric up to about chest height before wrapping.
3️⃣ Not driving the top leg down This leg helps lift your chest, making it much easier to sit up. Without it, you may feel stuck halfway!
💡Important to note: The higher you climb, the heavier the tail becomes, so expect more resistance the further up you go. As with all skills, start low to the mat when learning.
And of course, practice both sides for balance and strength, even if you don't go as high or do as many on your non-dominant, it still counts!
