Technique Tip: Heart Split

With Valentine’s Day coming up, I have a fun skill for you to explore, the Heart Split 💘.

I consider this one Beg/Int because it asks for solid grip strength and control while you’re supported by one hand. It makes a super cute photo-op shape and there are a couple common hiccups that can make it feel less stable. Watch the video below for the full breakdown and tips:

This one begins from Egg Beaters or Figure 8 Foot Locks, and it does require a solid amount of grip strength, especially in the top hand.

Set-up (step-by-step)

  • Start in Egg Beaters or Figure 8 Foot Locks

  • Reach your right hand across to the front and grab the left silk

  • Turn hips to the left and bend both knees until you're sitting close to your heels

  • Grab your tails (spin is optional)

  • Place the tails up and over your bottom shoulder

  • Begin to stand up and reach the top right hand up high

  • Open into your split

  • Place your bottom hand that's holding the tails directly under your bum

  • Goal: create an even amount of slack on both sides for a clean heart shape

  • To exit, release the tails, begin to stand up, release your top hand and carefully place one hand on each silk


Orientation note:

  • If your right hand is the high hand, you’ll open into a left split (and vice versa)


Common mistake #1: Tails trapped over the feet

One of the most common issues is that the tails end up over the top of the feet instead of underneath the arches. This leads to the fabrics getting crossed, which means no heart shape! If you choose to spin, take a moment to check that the tails stay under the arch of the foot, from big toe side to baby toe side, with extra attention on the front foot of your split.

Common mistake #2: Not standing tall enough first

If you open into the split before you reach high and stand up, the heart shape won’t fully appear, and you may feel tempted to hook the elbow (which could be cool, if done intentionally).Fix: Reach up, stand up, reach even higher, then open to your split.
